LENA-KAJSA DEGERLID f. Ohlsson
Born in Falkenberg, Sweden 41 01 02.
Artistic training at Slöjdföreningens Skola, department of Crafts and Design at University of Gothenburg.
Lena-Kajsa is born by the sea in Falkenberg, but has lived more than half her life in Ghent, Belgium and prior to that a couple of years in Versailles, France.
Ever since childhood, I've been working with clay and painting watercolours. I love to make birds, fruits and seedpods in clay, but also other creatures - sometimes winged ones. Birds have such a lot of character, they are beautiful, naughty, possess movement, the feathers...
For my watercolours I prefer to choose scenes inspired by the sea and the coast round Skagerak, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. The reflections of the rocks on the sea surface, the movements of the sky reflected in the water, thousand-year old patterns in the granite, the blue and the green hues...
To work with clay and colours gives me an immense joy and satisfaction.
I have fun with my birds and pots and brushwork.

CERAMIC SCULPTURE
For my ceramics, I spend all the time in my workshop, surrounded by clays and glazes, tools and lots of objects collected from nature. The objects are used for inspiration.
The clays I use are all stoneware clays of different mixture and structure. Some are enriched with aluminium
I also use china clay.
My glazes are mostly made from different ashes. I mix ashes from the apple tree, willow or poplar with oxides of different kinds.
Everything is then fired twice in an electric kiln.
The first firing, called biscuit firing, happens at 980 degrees and the final firing, called glazing firing, happens at 1230-1240 degrees.
One way of sculpting my birds is by starting with a shape I have turned on my potterīs wheel.
To create women, angels and birds, I sometimes 'texture' the surfaces with textiles eg. lace or rough linen, after which I paint the sunken parts created in the surface with oxides .
The possibilities are endless and I hardly ever run out of inspiration. Sometimes it is even hard to stop!!
